Amazi Meza - Good Water
October 2022
Amazi Meza - Good Water

Funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS AID012590/08/8)

Duration: 3 years (October 2022 - October 2025)

General Objective: Contribute to the improvement of living conditions and health of rural communities in Rwanda, with particular reference to the most vulnerable categories of the population

Specific Objective: Guarantee sustainable access to drinking water and adequate sanitation conditions for the rural population of the Busetsa Cell (Kageyo Sector, Gatsibo District, Rwanda)

BENEFICIARIES

Direct: 8525 inhabitants of the Busetsa Cell

Indirect: 433,020 inhabitants of the District of Gatsibo

PARTNER

Gatsibo District, Community Fountain Organization (CFO)

CONTEXT

The Kageyo sector is considered a priority because only 16% of the population has clean water. 11 of the 12 villages in this area do not have protected water sources and the population collects water from unsafe sources exposing themselves to the risk of disease.

9% of families do not have any toilet facilities for family use. The remaining families instead use rudimentary latrines which do not guarantee adequate hygienic conditions, creating an unhealthy environment close to their homes.

5 of the 6 schools in the area have toilet facilities in poor condition, with no male/female separation or inclusiveness for people with disabilities.

The population does not know good hygiene practices, especially women do not have the knowledge and facilities available to properly manage the menstrual period. There is also a strong social stigma that menstruating girls cannot show themselves in society and are therefore forced to stay home from school or work.

ACTIVITIES

  • Construction of 2 water systems, one solar and one gravity
  • Training and awareness of communities and technicians on the management and maintenance of water systems
  • Construction of latrines and Girls Rooms in 6 schools
  • Training and awareness within schools and communities on WASH and MHM issues
  • Family latrine construction campaign
  • Creation of a cooperative for the preparation of reusable sanitary pads
  • Creation of a waste management cooperative
